Who will benefit from this study?
The information we collect from you during our visits will be essential in our search to understand more about the triggers of laminitis. Ultimately, this may help to improve the early identification of laminitis.
By collecting manure, urine, pasture and soil from your horse and your land, we can thoroughly analyse the nature of these samples. With this information we will be able to build a profile of common compounds in these samples- specific to our horses and ponies based in Scotland.
By collecting the same samples during laminitic episodes, we can check to see if anything changes in the bacterial content of manure, the metabolite content of the urine, or the chemical nature of the grass and soil –in comparison to the first samples.
Research into the development of laminitis and what causes it has made significant progress, however there are still gaps in our knowledge of the disease. The aim of Phase 2 and 3 of Project PAL is to contribute to the understanding of the horse and pasture related changes involved in laminitis. By taking part, you can make this aim achievable.
